Indonesia Receives 313,100 Astrazeneca Doses from Covax

Jakarta. Indonesia received another 313,100 doses of Astrazeneca Covid-19 vaccine via the global sharing scheme Covax at the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang on Saturday.

Indonesia will receive enough doses to vaccinate 3-20 percent of the total population under the Covax AMC mechanism, according to a weekend press release by the Covid-19 Handling and National Economic Recovery Committee (KPCPEN).

“The arrival of the Covax-procured Astrazeneca doses is also inseparable from the government’s hardwork in fostering multilateral cooperation with Covax since last October,” the press statement said.

Following the fresh shipment, Indonesia’s total vaccine supply —finished and bulk vaccine combined— has reached 92.2 million doses.

So far, Indonesia’s finished vaccine supply is as follows: 3 million doses from Sinovac, 6.7 million doses from Astrazeneca, and 1 million Sinopharm doses.

In addition, the archipelagic country has secured 81.5 million Sinovac doses in bulk form. State-run pharmaceutical firm Bio Farma is in charge of processing the half-finished vaccine. And once processed, Indonesia’s finished vaccines will amount to 76.2 million doses  — enough to inoculate 37.6 million people.

Indonesia is targeting to administer a million doses per day starting this month, in a bid to achieve herd immunity.

To this end, the government has slashed the “four-table” vaccination system to a two-table system. They have also started to give Covid-19 jabs to those aged 50 years and above in Jakarta and Bali. As well as kicking off the pilot program for the phase three vaccination program.

As of June 4, Indonesia has administered the first dose to 17.3 million people. Whilst 11.1 million people have received their second dose.

The launch of the “gotong royong” vaccination campaign —in which private firms can procure vaccines for their employees— is also expected to ramp up the vaccination drive.

Up to May 30, the gotong royong program has administered the first Sinopharm dose to 49,000 employees from 36 business entities or corporation. Under the gotong royong scheme, 86,000 doses have been rolled out to Jakarta, Banten, West Java, Riau Islands, North Sumatra, and North Maluku.
